Safety Demonstration The pre-flight safety demonstration is a detailed explanation given before take-off to airline passengers about the safety features of a commercial aircraft. Once an emergency happens, passengers can survive themselves by the things they learned from the demonstration when flight attendants help others. Required Elements Safety demonstrations are required by the basic international air safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and national civil aviation authorities. A safety demonstration typically covers all these aspects: Ø the use of the seat belt; Ø the requirements that passengers must comply with lighted signs, posted placards, and crew members instructions; Ø the location and use of the emergency exits, evacuation slides and emergency floor lighting; Ø the use of the oxygen masks; Ø the location and use of the life vests, life rafts and flotation devices; the use of passenger seat cushions as flotation devices. Reminders Ø smoking is not allowed on board, including in the lavatories; Ø mobile phones in airplane mode and other electronic devices may be used when the aircraft is at cruising altitude and the Captain turns off the seat-belt sign; Ø passengers must ask a flight attendant prior to using electronics; Ø seatbacks and tray tables should be in their upright and locked position, and carry-on luggage should be stowed in the overhead locker or underneath a seat prior to take-off and landing; Ø You should review the safety information card prior to takeoff and follow along during the demonstration.
