More than 50 corticosteroid hormones are produced in the adrenal cortex by reactions that remove the side chain from the D ring of cholesterol and introduce oxygen to form keto and hydroxyl groups. Many of these reactions are catalyzed by cytochrome P-450 (CYP) enzymes.
