OFFICER ON WATCH(OOW) is fully responsible for the safety of the ship and everything on board, untill he is formally relieved of his watch by another officer or by the Master. until such time that he is formally relieved, he must always remain at his place of duty. Bridge watch is a teamwork witch whould be organized in routines suitable for the vessel and her trade. TURN OVER of watchekeeping duty: off going OOW must give all important information to incoming OOW: 1. ship's course and speed, bridge equipment being used and working condition, atmospheric observations. 2. vessel position when within sight of land 3. relative position and general direction of other vessels in the area around own ship. Incoming OOW must ensure himself that he fully comprehends the information handed to him. Read Master's night order and acknwledge full understanding by signing it. Ensure himself that all members of his team are capable of performing their duty before he accepts responsibility of watchkeeping duty. off going OOW must not turn over the watch to anyone, if he is not sure the incoming OOW is capable of safely performing the watch. In this case off going OOW must call the Master.
