Passage B In my practice as a relationship counsellor, I come across people nearly every day who believe common myths about relationships. Here are several of these myths about relationships that people believe .Do you believe them? Opposite s attract . Many people believe that finding a partner who is very different from themselves is a great relationship match. But while it may be exciting at first to be with someone not like you , in reality, once the early excitement wears off, you may find that the things you used to find unusual about that person now annoy you. Eventually ,the different attitudes, values, and interests can become a source of conflict for couples.Instead ,stop focusing on finding your opposite and find someone who has an approach to life similar to yours. Decide what ’ s most important to you and find someone who has a similar list. Love at first sight. It ’ s a constant surprise to me how many people saw their partner from across the room and “ just knew ” they were to be together. What does that have to do with the health or happiness of a future relationship? In actuality , there are many complex reasons why people are attracted to one another at the beginning, but remember that the attraction can often fade as quickly as it arrives. Honesty is the best policy . It ’ s a common belief that healthy couples have no secrets from one another, but in reality honesty can hurt . First of all, telling your partner about things in your past that you know are likely to be upsetting is not going to do you or your relationship any good, and could be hurtful to your partner. More importantly, don ’ t tell your partner that he or she looks terrible in a favouriteoutfit ,even if your partner asks you to be honest. Sometimes a sincere, if untrue, compliment can do wonders for a relationship. If you remember to tell the truth about the important things, the small, unimportant lies won ’ t be a problem. It ’ s important to look at how relationships work in a clear and logical way and to believe facts instead of myths. Remembering what works in a relationship is just as important as stopping the things that are bad for it.If you do this, you might find success in your relationships — something that many people unfortunately never do.
