Fabrication is the process of selecting or creating a style for a fabric. The fabrics suitable for a specific style depends on the characteristics of the fabric: Surface interest — color, aesthetics, pattern, texture. Weight — correct weight for wear requirements, season and construction details. Fabric hand — correct stiffness for silhouette; fabric feels pleasant and drapes well. Fiber — suited to the season, good performance and easy care; allergic reactions rare. These four elements form the character of the fabric. They also dictate many of the limits on styling. The designer should be familiar with all types of fabric, just as a potter is familiar with the properties of many types of clay. The designer is a fabric sculptor ,and the human body is the frame of reference.
