I used to be a radio broadcaster. Recently I received a 41 from the activity director at a nursing home. She told me there are a couple of former broadcasters who live in the home and they would 42 a visit from someone with a 43 background who can trade stories with them about the good old days. I’m retired ( 退休 ), and I have 44 time so I said sure, I’d come for a 45 or two. That has developed into a routine ( 惯例 ) in which I spend an afternoon each week 46 the old men and helping them to 47 memories of happier, busier times. One of them can only 48 in a wheelchair and, 49 still, has dementia ( 痴呆 ) and knows he is 50 losing his memory and ability to think. My other new 51 in the home is about ten years older than I. He has cerebral palsy (a medical condition affecting someone’s control over their movement and speech), and is also a wheelchair user. Neither man can 52 independently anymore; they can’t drive a car, can’t prepare their own meals or plant a garden. They’re being well 53 . They have television, people to serve their daily needs and workers at the home who try their best to keep them 54 . They have family members who visit them from time to time and now I 55 they have me. It makes me 56 what lies ahead, perhaps not for a number of years, perhaps tomorrow, I don’t 57 . The thought of being dead doesn’t 58 me. I’m getting older and I’m still going strong and feeling 59 . I go to visit the men in the nursing home and sometimes I look ahead into the unknown. Life gets 60 in unexpected ways as one gets older. 41. A. gift B. call C. prize D. warning 42. A. enjoy B. pay C. allow D. plan 43. A. special B. wide C. different D. similar 44.
