Reading Bear is the first free program online to teach beginning readers vocabulary(词汇). It also introduces all the main “phonics rules”(语音规则) of written English using rich media. How does it work? In each presentation we introduce one or a few phonetic rules with a video. Presentations are easy to use. We sound out a word slowly and then quickly. Then we display a picture of the word. When we show a sentence, we sound it out and show a video to give an example for the sentence. Each presentation uses about 25 words. We hope you will use Reading Bear in a non-stressful, non-pressuring way. Learning to read can be fun and easy if you go at the child's step. Go as slow as the student needs to, which might be very slow in the beginning. Your patience will be rewarded. It cannot teach English grammar, but it can help teach reading and vocabulary. Let students understand that they should stay on a presentation only as long as they have to. If they have mastered a set of words, and are getting 14 or 15 out of 15 on the quiz for a presentation, then move on. Reading Bear is a free project. Reading Bear’s images and many of its videos were donated(捐赠) by Shutterstock.com, to whom we wish to offer deep thanks. The rest of the videos were also offered by Shutterstock.com, at a big discount. The project’s designer(设计者) is Larry Sanger, who started the project, designed the software, and carefully made each presentation. Larry is best known as co-founder(共同创立者) and the organizer of Wikipedia. He is the father of two boys, ages 5 and 1. He taught his older son to read at an early age with various tools, including Reading Bear.
