The Studio Era and the Golden Age of Hollywood succumbed to two forces in the late 1940s: 1) In 1949, the major companies were forced to sell off their cinema by the U.S. government, after their practices were defined as monopolistic; and 2) the rise of television in the 1950s sped up the decline of the studio system.
