Black Cat Black cat is considered unlucky for some reason. Whenever a black cat was seen it was avoided at all cost because it was perceived to be a witch in disguise. In the era of the black death, people believed that cats were the spreaders of pestilence, and then called black cats “devil’s messenger” and believed that black cats were the incarnation of witches, who owned cats. In 1563, England enacted the “Witchcraft Act”(《巫术法案》), which regarded cats as “evil acts”. The cat owners were imprisoned and even sentenced to death. In ancient Egypt, black cats were regarded as a symbol of the goddess, and the death penalty was imposed for killing a cat. The domestic cats died accidentally. The whole family had to shave their eyebrows to show their condolences. But after the 12th century, the situation of black cats plummeted. The massive cat-killed campaign lasted for four centuries, and black cats were nearly extinct in Europe. All of this, because of hatred against women and superstition of doctrine, is treated as heresy. Nowadays, with the rapid development of medical technology and the popularization of scientific knowledge, people have clearly understood the cause of the Black Death. The Black Death is an infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis(鼠疫耶尔森氏杆菌). Black cats that had been treated unfairly were also rehabilitated. The United States has designated August 17th of each year as the “Black Cat Appreciation Day”(“黑猫鉴赏日”). Meanwhile, The United Kingdom also designated October 27 as “Black Cat Day” (“黑猫日”) to appeal to the public to pay more attention to black cats.
