In 1891, after finishing his studies in England, Gandhi returned to India. He set himself up as a lawyer in Rajkot. As he did not get much work there, he came to Bombay. Even in Bombay he did not get any cases( 案件 ). Finally, he got one case. He prepared we ll for it, but in court( 法庭 ) he was unable to perform we ll . Gandhi felt disappointed. Just at that time Gandhi's elder brother managed to get him a case from South Africa. Then Gandhi left his homeland for South Africa. There were many Indians staying in South Africa at that time, but the British treated the Indians and the natives very badly. Everywhere there was discrimination ( 歧视 ). There was one set of rules for the Indians and the natives, and a different se t for the British. L i ke other Indians, Gandhi was treated very badly by the British. But he decided to stay in South Africa after he finished his work. He organized many meetings to l et more people know the situation. As a result, the people regarded him as their leader, and agreed to be guided by him. Gandhi's movement aimed at fighting the unjust laws. It was no easy task. During his twenty years in South Africa, Gandhi was sent to prison many times, but he did not give up. Finally, the British had to agree to abolish ( 废除 ) the unjust laws. Thinking that his work was over, he decided to return to India. But the people were very reluc t ant to let him go back. They gave him many expensive gifts. However, Gandhi did not accept anything. He gave everything to the local organizations. In 1914, Gandhi returned to his motherland to fight for the freedom of India.
