Airplanes are the preferred mode of transportation for mant people when taking a long trip. For others, cruise ships offer the best option. Yet, some travelers scorn(轻视) these modes of popular transportation. For them, the only way to truly experience a country is travelling overland by motorcycle, train or hitchhiking (免费搭乘顺路车). Kevin and Julia Sanders are two well-known overland travelers. In 35 days they rode by motorcycle from Alaska to the tip of South America, a journey of 20,000miles across 14 countries. The Sanders also traveled around the world by motorcycle in just over 19 days. Kevin believes that travelling by bike gives people more freedom because they never have to worry about bus or train schedules. Instead, you can organize your time the way you want. If you prefer to travel in a little more comfort, trains are another popular overland option. The train gives travelers the opportunity to interact with locals (本地人), and to go off the beaten track. Exploring Western Europe by train is a very popular adventure for college students as the train system is excellent, affordable and easy to navigate (导航). For the truly adventurous, hitchhiking can be an exciting way to see a country. Hitching can be quite dangerous and is not recommended in many countries, but when it is safe enough to do so, travelers love it. It is a guaranteed (保证的) way to meet people, and hitchhikers often learn things not found in travel guides.
