However, in many English translations, it is always found that the vivid cultural image is omitted or replaced or translated improperly. The translation of cultural image should not only convey its lexical meaning, but the culture of the original. Therefore,the vivid cultural image is understood by readers. In brief, both the lexical meaning and culture of the cultural image are of equal importance in cultural image translation. Adaptation Theory proposed by Verschueren explores the language use from cultural,cognitive and social aspects. According to Adaptation Theory, using language isthe process of making continuous linguistic choices as well as the process ofcontext adaptation. However, translation is also the process of making choices based on adaptation to various contexts in order to meet the communicative needs. This thesis takes Gladys' version of Bian Cheng as the example and does the research of cultural image translation from the perspective of context adaptation. By combining such factors as readers, the translator, culture andso on, this thesis regards the process of cultural image translation as theprocess of cultural communication from the perspective of context adaptation.Furthermore, the translator should make different adaptations according to themental world, the social world and the physical world in the reproduction process of cultural image. The various adaptations provide different methods for cultural image translation. Under the guidance of context adaptation, the author firstly classifies the cultural image and then analyzes Gladys Yang's translation methods for cultural image and the deficiencies in cultural image translation. At last, the author points out the good examples of cultural image translation in The Border Town and gives the revised suggestions for some improper cultural image translations. The author hopes that this study will provide the researches in this field with a new horizon and shed new light on the practice of translating cultural image.
