Using Coordinating Conjunctions to Combine Sentences Some of the following groups of sentences can be combined using a conjunction from the FANBOYS list (for and, nor but, or, yet, so). Combine the sentences you believe should be joined. Keep in mind the reasons for joining sentences: 1.to show how one sentence relates to another sentence; 2.to avoid lists of short, choppy sentences; 3.to emphasize some ideas over others. Not all sentences need to be combined. For each set of sentences you join, be prepared to explain why you chose to join them. Be sure to combine at least five sets of sentences, but join more if you believe doing so would be effective. 1. Like cigarette smoking, hookah smoking uses tobacco to deliver the addictive drug nicotine. Although not all scientists agree, hookah smoking may be as toxic as cigarette smoking. 2. .Some hookah smokers believe that this practice is less harmful than smoking cigarettes. Hookah smoking actually carries many of the same health risks. 3. Smoking cigarettes is not a healthy practice. Hookah smoking is not beneficial to health. 4. Hookahs are water pipes that are used to smoke specially processed tobacco that is typically flavored. Hookahs are also referred to by a number of different names, including narghile( 水烟筒 ), Argileh , shisha, hubble-bubble and goza. 5. Hookah smoking is frequently practiced in groups. It can properly be referred to as a social activity. 6. Health organizations are beginning to pay more attention to the health effects of hookah use. Hookah use has been on the rise around the world in recent years. 7. A Monitoring the Future survey found that in 2011, 18.5 percent of twelfth-grade students in the United States had used hookahs in the past year. An even higher percentage of university students-from 22 to 40 percent- have used hookahs in the past year. • •
