The tax on things brought into a country is called “duty” . Most countries allow returning travelers to bring in a certain amount of goods without tax, or “duty free” . The things that are allowed in duty free are for personal use, either as remembrances of the trip or as gifts to friends and relatives. Each country has its own regulations about what can or cannot be brought in from abroad. Some things, called “contraband” , are not allowed at all. An item that is contraband may not legally be brought into or sent out of a country. For example, drugs are contraband and may not be brought into a country. Sometimes art treasures are not allowed to be taken out of a country. People who try to bring contraband items into a country or who try to hide things so they won’ t hide to pay duty are called “smugglers” . Part of customs officers’ job is to watch for contraband and smugglers. However, they know the most travelers and tourists are not smugglers. Personal things visitors or tourists bring into the country are not taxed. The country is anxious for tourists to enjoy their hospitality. Most tourists bring only personal things they will need for their trip. They do not bring things for resale. remembrances:回忆;记忆;纪念品;纪念 watch for:寻找 anxious:焦急的;渴望的
