Fish and chips making headlines but it's not all good news The month of June has seen fish and chips hitting the headlines but not always for the best of reasons. As one of Britain's iconic dishes, it comes as no surprise that it now has its very own date on the calendar -National Fish and Chips Day. The fish and chips industry first came up with the idea to celebrate the classic dish and June 7, 2019, marked the third national day to honour the beloved meal. In the same week, a famous Yorkshire fish and chip shop announced that they are planning to open a restaurant in China. The dish's popularity has been putdown to Chinese President Xi Jinping eating fish and chips on a UK visit in2015. But there was also bad news for lovers of fish and chips. The archetypal dinner of cod in crispy batter could be off the chip shop menu in the future because of climate change, according to a new study. Marine scientists have issued a warning that large fish species (like cod) will almost certainly be the first casualties of warmer Oceans.
