Read and choose the correct answers NIGHT SHIFT Employees working a regular job from 9 am to 5 pm no longer make up the majority of workers. Over 50 per cent of all employees are nowadays involved in shiftwork and so work a range of different hours outside the regular 9 to 5. If you are a shiftworker, it’s important to be aware of the health implications of your job, and the steps you can take to make your working life easier. what are the problems associated with shiftwork? sleep cycles: Sleep disruption is the most common problem, as people get their longest and deepest sleep when they go to bed before midnight, and their shortest when sleep begins in the morning. Fatigue at work: This tends to be worse during the second half of a shift, especially between two and six in the morning. Many shiftworkers actually briefly fall asleep when working, which has obvious implications for workplace safety. health effects: Common health problems that shiftworkers suffer include gastro-intestinal complaints (as the digestive system is relatively inactive at night) and depression, which can be triggered or increased by irregular sleep patterns. Managing odd hours You need to get as close to your normal amount of sleep as possible. Try the following: • Reduce the light levels in your bedroom by using curtains with backing or blinds • Sleep in cool conditions, using an air conditioner or fan if necessary. • Reduce noise by using heavy curtains. Let close neighbours know when you will be sleeping, so they can avoid mowing or doing noisy repairs. • Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Try to allow at least seven hours in bed, even if you only sleep for four or five of these, as rest itself is important. • Find out what time during the day suits you best for sleeping, and make sure you stick to it.
