Queen Elizabeth II Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21 1926 in London. Elizabeth and her younger sister were educated privately at home. She took on official duties at the age of 16. At the end of World War II she joined in the women's branch of the British Army named the Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she worked as a driver and technical worker. On her 18th birthday she was declared state counsellor according to the Regency Act. After World War II she began to carry out public service. In 1947, Elizabeth married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark who abdicated his Greek and Danish titles upon marrying then-Princess Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Prince Philip had a happy marriage and they had four children. In 1952 when they were in Kenya for a royal tour, Elizabeth succeeded to the throne suddenly when they received the news of King George VI's death. Elizabeth’s coronation was held in 1953 in Westminster Abbey London. The coronation was broadcast both on radio and on TV and it was enjoyed by millions of people all over the world, it was the first time in history that the proceedings on the coronation were watched on live television. It was of great significance for the both the British monarchy and British Commonwealth. Meanwhile, it seemed a symbolic ending to contraction for post-war Britain. The Queen’s reign in the 1950s could be considered to be the golden age. The royal family was highly respected. But in the following years the situation changed a lot. People’s attitude towards the monarchy began to decline due to the marital problems and scandals. However, the Silver Jubilee in 1977 and the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1981 eased the tension. Again the breakup of their marriage caught the headline and brought the royal family some criticism. The trouble made the royal family and the monarchy lose its color. During her following years, the Queen emphasized a lot on the uniting of the Commonwealth nations although it was really tough job in the post-war world. She expressed her viewpoint on the importance of commonwealth nations working together. The year 2012 saw the miracle of the Queen and the royal family, the marriage of William and Kate in April drew world-wide attention. In summer, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee of 60 years on the throne won people’s celebration and popularity. Again in July, the Queen’s presence in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics brought global welcome. During these years, the romantic love of Prince William and Kate as well as their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte have won the Queen a great deal of love and respect. On September 10th 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest serving British monarch who had ruled for 63 years 7 months. During her rule as Head of State, Her Majesty has tried not to influence in political issues and exert mild influence on the nation.
