He got Polio in 1921 which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He established a treatment center to help others with it and directed the March of Dimes Foundation which eventually funded an effective vaccine ( 疫苗 ) . David Blunkett has been blind since birth and came from a poor family in one of Sheffield � s poorest districts , but he rose to become Education and Employment Secretary , Home Secretary and Work and Pensions Secretary. He has never let this fact hold him back in any aspect of his life. Tanni Grey-Thompson is probably the best known disabled athlete , representing Britain in distances from 100 m to 800 m. In total over her career , she won 16 medals ( 11 gold , 4 silver and a bronze ), held over 30 world records and won the London Marathon 6 times between 1992 and 2002. Francisco Goya was a great Spanish painter who suffered a severe and undiagnosed illness which left him deaf at 47. He went on to create some of his best known works depite his deafness. He provided inspiration for the work of later artists including Picasso and Monet.
