At the present time applications of traffic calming in Britain tend to be identified with areas, both in suburbia and in inner cites, where traffic is not an issue. Traffic schemes are also used in villages without bypasses (to return the villages to their occupants), in town centers(to encourage their greater use by pedestrians), and in towns and villages(ton redefine surplus road space for use by other groups of road users). In the , however, it is possible that their use will encompass level traffic restraint where capacity is an issue, i.e. traffic calming at this level could be used to discourage traffic along these corridors while at the same time avoiding the transfer of traffic onto local streets.
