How Not to Treat Customers There are two department stores in my town. I will call them Store “A” and Store “B”. They carry many of the same items. They are about the same size. They look very much the same. But oh, how different they are to shop in. At Store “A”, employees are 1 to keep customers happy. They help customers find things; they carry packages; they hand out lollipops to children. They will even guide a customer away from a 2 brand item to something that cost less but is just as good. Customers find that shopping in Store “A” is a very pleasant experience. The rule in this store seems to be “The customer is always right.” I don't know this for sure, but I 3 that the rule in Store “B” is “The customer is a big bother”. Clerks just stare at customers who ask for help. They talk with fellow employees while customers wait in long lines at the checkout counters. When a customer asks a clerk for Information, the clerk often answers, “I don't know,” and walks away. Several months ago, I heard that Store “B” might go out of business. Now it is 4 . The store will close by the end of the month. Are you surprised? I'm not.
