The return of old school blue and gold British passport Most passports issued by EU member states are burgundy in colour with the words “ European Union ” along with the name of the issuing member state printed on the cover. After officially leaving the EU, Britain will return to its iconic blue and gold, pre-EU passport design, which was first used 100 years ago. The blue designs are scheduled to be issued from the end of this year and will no longer bear the inscription ‘ European Union ’. Many new style document is also being hyped as one of the most technologically advanced biometric documents in the world: it will use polycarbonate rather than paper for the page that contains the holder’s biographic data. This durable transparent material is also used to make bulletproof glass. Ironically, the new passports will be manufactured by a French-Dutch company wity their production facilities based in Poland. To add insult to injury, after Brexit they will be more imported from the EU.
